The arrival of a newborn is a joyous occasion. However, some babies may require extra care due to premature birth, low birth weight, or medical complications. At Parvathi Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), our team of dedicated neonatologists, nurses, and respiratory therapists provide specialized care for these fragile infants.

What is a NICU?

A NICU is a specially equipped unit within the hospital that provides intensive care for newborns who need advanced medical interventions.

Why Might My Baby Need NICU Care?

Several factors can necessitate NICU care, including:

Prematurity

Babies born before 37 weeks gestation may require assistance with breathing, feeding, and maintaining body temperature.

Low birth weight

Newborns weighing less than 2.49 kilogram may have difficulty regulating body functions and require specialized monitoring and support.

Breathing difficulties

Conditions like respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) or pneumonia may necessitate respiratory support using ventilators or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

Birth defects

Congenital heart defects, cleft lip or palate, or other anomalies may require surgery or ongoing medical management.

Infections

Newborns are susceptible to infections that require prompt diagnosis and treatment.
