In some pregnancies, a doctor may recommend invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures to get a more detailed picture of the fetus’s health. While prenatal screening tests like ultrasounds and blood tests offer valuable information, invasive procedures allow for the direct sampling of fetal cells or tissue for chromosomal analysis or other tests.

When Are Invasive Procedures Considered?

These procedures are typically offered when there’s an increased risk of a chromosomal abnormality or genetic condition, such as:

Types of Invasive Procedures:

Parvathi Hospital offers a range of advanced invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures, including:

Amniocentesis

A sample of amniotic fluid, surrounding the fetus, is withdrawn using a thin needle inserted through the abdomen. This fluid contains fetal cells that can be analyzed for chromosomal abnormalities and other genetic conditions.

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)

A small sample of placental tissue is collected, often through the cervix or abdomen. This tissue contains fetal cells that can be analyzed for genetic disorders.

Therapeutic Procedures:

In some cases, depending on the diagnosis, minimally invasive fetal therapy procedures may be offered to address certain fetal conditions during pregnancy. It’s important to note that these procedures are complex and require careful evaluation by a team of specialists.

At Parvathi Hospital, we understand the emotional weight of considering invasive procedures. Our team of experienced genetic counselors will provide comprehensive information about these procedures, discuss the risks and benefits, and help you make informed decisions for your pregnancy.

FAQ's

Invasive procedures carry a small risk of miscarriage, infection, or bleeding. During your consultation, your doctor will discuss these risks in detail and answer any questions you may have.

Following the procedure, you'll be monitored for any complications. The fetal cells or tissue will be sent to a laboratory for analysis, and results may take several days or weeks depending on the specific test. Your doctor will keep you informed throughout the process and discuss the results with you in detail.

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a newer option that utilizes a blood test from the mother to assess the baby's chromosomes. While NIPT can be a valuable tool, it may not be suitable for all pregnancies and cannot diagnose all genetic conditions. Your doctor will discuss the most appropriate options based on your individual situation.
