First Trimester NT/NB Scans: Early Detection for a Healthy Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but it’s natural to have concerns about your baby’s well-being. At Parvathi Hospital, we offer first-trimester nuchal translucency (NT) scans and nasal bone (NB) scans to provide valuable information about your developing baby’s health in the early stages of pregnancy.

What are NT/NB Scans?

Nuchal Translucency (NT) Scan

This specialized ultrasound measures the fluid collection at the back of your baby's neck between 11 and 13 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. An increased nuchal translucency can be associated with a slightly higher risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome.

Nasal Bone (NB) Scan

This scan is often performed alongside the NT scan and checks for the presence of the nasal bone in the developing fetus. The absence of a nasal bone can be an indicator of an increased risk for certain chromosomal abnormalities.

Benefits of NT/NB Scans:

What to Expect During the Scan

NT/NB scans are typically performed transabdominally (through the abdomen) using a high-frequency ultrasound machine. The scan is painless and takes about 20-30 minutes.

FAQ's

No, NT/NB scans are screening tests and cannot definitively diagnose chromosomal abnormalities. However, they can indicate an increased risk, allowing for further investigation through diagnostic tests like amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS).

Your doctor will discuss the results with you in detail and recommend further testing based on your individual situation. Genetic counseling can also be helpful to understand the implications and available options.

Ultrasound scans are considered a safe and non-invasive procedure for both mother and baby.
