Early Pregnancy Scans: Essential for Early Detection

Early pregnancy scans are a crucial component of fetal medicine, offering valuable insights during the early stages of pregnancy. Typically conducted between 6 to 10 weeks of gestation, these scans are designed to confirm pregnancy, assess fetal viability, and evaluate early fetal development. At Parvathi Hospital in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, our early pregnancy scans utilize advanced ultrasound technology to provide detailed and accurate imaging, ensuring a healthy start for both mother and baby.

Procedure of Early Pregnancy Scans

Pre-Scan Preparation:

Before the scan, our team will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the type of scan, you might be asked to drink water to fill your bladder for a transabdominal ultrasound, or a transvaginal ultrasound may be used for earlier visualization.

Initial Assessment

The procedure begins with a review of your medical history and any symptoms you may be experiencing. This helps tailor the scan to your specific needs.

Ultrasound Imaging

A transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasound is performed to capture high-resolution images. The transabdominal ultrasound involves applying gel to the abdomen, while the transvaginal ultrasound involves inserting a small probe into the vagina for clearer imaging. The scan checks for the presence of a pregnancy, fetal heartbeat, gestational sac, and embryo.

Documentation and Follow-Up

After the scan, a detailed report is prepared, highlighting key findings such as fetal heartbeat, gestational age, and any concerns. Our specialists will discuss these findings with you and provide recommendations for any additional care or follow-up.

FAQ's

The optimal time for an early pregnancy scan varies depending on your individual circumstances. Generally, it's recommended between 6 and 12 weeks of pregnancy. Consult your doctor to determine the best timing for you.

Ultrasound scans are considered a safe and non-invasive way to monitor pregnancy. The sound waves used in the scan pose no known risk to the mother or baby.

The absence of a heartbeat on a very early scan (before 6 weeks) may not necessarily be a cause for concern. Fetal development varies, and a follow-up scan a week or two later may be recommended. However, if a heartbeat is not detected after a certain point, it could indicate a pregnancy loss. Your doctor can discuss the results and next steps with you.
